Week 4 – Into the Image World

Screen grab from Falmouth University presentation
Tommy Hilfiger Freedom Ad-
We see this advert using the American flag, which has strong ideological beliefs to the American people. Representing freedom and the ‘American dream’, I would think it would be beneficial for an American audience in which to fully understand the context and meaning. Although for the rest of the world we can still see the symbolic signs and what he represents, even if we don’t agree. The use of the products name of ‘freedom’ is an important text for the advert. When put with all the other signs, it helps to quickly distinguish the relationship between the product and the flag.
Calvin Klien Eternity Ad –
Using 2 images for the campaign to denote a happy family scene quickly corresponds well to the products name of ‘Eternity’ and the idea of ‘families lasting forever’. Although I am slightly confused why this would be good advertising for a perfume (just doesn’t appeal to me) I can see the company wanting to appeal to both sexes and all ages.
YSL Cinema Ad –
This advert has a cinematic setup, which has a straight correlation with the name of the product. This has been a running theme between all 3 adverts, which I’m guessing so the advert can portray its symbolic meaning quickly and get you to buy their product. The stereotypical use of a femme fatale could either empower or offend its targeted female audience.
My intent
For my current practice my intent is to document military establishments that have been closed down, either for sometime or are in the process of doing so. I wish to showcase military history through the years in order for the public to understand and commemorate these past landscapes. I also will document with the intent to record the landscapes in which they stand now, to be able to identify these sites and preserve the knowledge and create a community in which that can be shared, thorough families and the armed forces.
The strategies I will employ in order to reach my potential are to remain adaptable with every shoot. Each new location brings something new and challenging to the shoot and I must remain consistent when recording them.I have learnt that collaboration is key with finding new sites, working with RAF100 and Queen’s University Belfast in order to share information. Working with museums for archive imagery and information on historical buildings.
