Photo Shoot
This shoot took me former site of RAF Castle Archdale and RAF Killadeas.
RAF Castle Archdale is situated on the Lough Erne and was seaplane station between 1940-1945 and provided essential presence within the Costal Command campaign. (http://www.forgottenairfields.com/united-kingdom/northern-ireland/fermanagh/castle-archdale-s1270.html)
I had a guide from the museum who took me around the site and pointed out some of the original buildings. The shoot was more of a recce to be honest as my time was restricted as I was part of bigger party for RAF100 and we had to get to another meeting in the area.
At this point with not much time to capture I took what I could and played with maybe presenting my images as a panoramic to increase the quality and include the whole interior.
RAF Killadeas
This site is also located on Lough Erne and is situated 6 miles apart from Castle Archdale and was home to the Catalina Seaplane between 1941-1947.
With this shoot I didn’t have a guide with me and had to use the website ww2ni, http://ww2ni.webs.com/which I was able to visually identify some of the areas from using that website. I found it quite difficult to get a feel for the place and how to capture the World War 2 hangar as it was quite cluttered from the use of the yacht club. At the time I was unsure how long I was going to be there so I focused on the hangar again, more of a recce shoot again. At the end of the visit I was able to meet a person who was very knowledgeable of the area and took his details so I could arrange another time so he could show me around. I’m still struggling with an approach to document these sites and how they lay with the current landscape, think I need to do some more research and get some ideas which would best suit my photographic practice in a more objective perspective.
