Photo Shoot

This shoot took me too RAF Cluntoe 1942-1959 situated close to Lough Neagh and had various uses for the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) and later a training unit for the RAF. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Cluntoe

I didn’t have a guide for this shoot so had to find all the scatted building for myself which took some hours but it was raining quite heavy so I decided to locate everything before shooting. This is the best site I have been to so far in terms of how much is left of the airfield. I was able to identify a lot of the buildings just by becoming more familiar with these types of military structures as they stand out from agricultural ones.

After researching Bernd and Hilla Becher I was more determined to capture in a style that was more systematic and objective. Also I wanted to some how capture these sites so they would correlate from the first shot to the last. I was mindful of where the horizon was, tried to shoot with telephoto lens to compress image. I also bought some steps with me so I could fully extend my tripod to try and change the level in which I always shoot. After the rain had stopped and I managed to locate what buildings I could. I only had time to focus on one building and that was the control tower, which was brilliantly intact. There was also another building off to the side of the control tower.

I was still working on the idea of a panoramic to increase detail and quality but the weather was temperamental and my exposure kept changing. I shot straight on and slighting to the side, I think I prefer showing the building ¾ on so you can see more of the structure in one. I didn’t get to shoot much and no interior shots because there were horses in the field and I didn’t have permission. At least I was able to locate most buildings so when I visit again I can crack straight on and site capturing the whole of the site.
