This week we looked at Copyright, business plans and other areas of business other than producing photos for your own business.
As I am currently employed by the MOD as a photographer, a business plan is something I have never thought about. It was great thinking about other important areas such as accountancy and legal as these areas I do not get involved with for my current employment. Copyright was interesting too on a personal level, tips like disabling right click download has made me think I need to review my website. For my current employment I only have to worry about displaying Crown Copyright in the metadata and that’s about as far as it goes.
This week’s challenge was to think about a mission statement, the product and the market for our own practice. As my current practice would focus on the RAF photographers’ statement, instead I will focus these areas around my current project as to get me thinking in the scenario if I was self-employed.
The Mission Statement
To produce an array of high quality images that record the historic landscape as we see it today. Concentrating on documenting all elements relating to preserving, understanding and appreciation of all landscape types through the ages. We strive to work with clients to produce quality pieces of work either for aesthetics or for a photographic survey, which could aid further research projects. Research is the key to our success, exploring all aspects and ensuring the brief is met on time whilst using the most up to date photographic techniques and equipment.
The Product
Our versatile products mean we are happy to discuss with clients, possible outcomes that would best suit their needs. We strive to capture the client’s vision and interests with the subject matter or landscape if aesthetics are the forefront. Alternatively, we are happy to make suggestions and take lead by using our expertise on documenting the landscape as a photographic survey.
The Market
Our clients come from academic, professional and community backgrounds all with varied agendas. Our ability to adapt to different projects from varied backgrounds means will deliver every time.
Ooooh I found that challenge quite hard, I have no experience categorising my practice into those 3 areas. I think if I was going to go self-employed I would certainly utilise the Prince’s Trust business model for ideas and tips (https://www.princes-trust.org.uk/help-for-young-people/tools-resources/business-tools/business-plans). I need to research my audience, the client as without knowing that I’m unable to produce a desirable product.
