This week looked at the commercial environment of professional photography and how our practice might fit within.
The presentations had some great tips for venturing out into the commercial world, discussions on stock imagery and who owns the rights was very insightful. At the moment however, I’m pretty happy working for the MOD. The MOD have their own website Defence Imagery, for stock imagery and news packages and where most our work features so it can be accessed by anybody. The website breaks down 3 categories and their different licence usages. http://www.defenceimagery.mod.uk/fotoweb/
To be honest this is something I have never looked at before, so this module has made me think about usage licences and copyright within the MOD for my current practice. It has been interesting to know how the rest of the world works so perhaps I can understand markets/audiences who may be interested in my work later on. Looking at all these tips and points on the commercial world I find all quite dauting and I am grateful I am a paid photographer under the MOD safety blanket. Although I do not intend to venture into commercial photography anytime soon (would rather stay an artist) suggestions like researching the brand, knowing their personality, developing personal visual language to demonstrate uniqueness are tips I can apply right now into my current job and for my project.
