Sustainable Prospects Week 11

This week we listened to a conversation with photographer Felicity McCabe. Clients such as New York Times, The Guardian and Financial Times have commissioned works. Interview goes through Felicity’s thought process in achieving a successful balance between art and commercial practice and where she finds her motivations in order to experiment and develop her visual language.

This was a lovely personal interview, Felicity goes in depth about her approach to all of her projects and how over time she has been able to develop her confidence. Which in turn has created her visual language that is recognisable and gets the commercial bookings. At the start of her career Felicity assisted for some years gaining knowledge and experience in the commercial side, realising that she would have to create a portfolio in order to progress to the next level. That is when she started experimenting, mainly with lightening concepts and visually displaying her work as a paring. Many of her projects were often sparked with words or looking at other mediums such as painting, poems and literature. This really made me think about my practice and after the MA what to do and hearing Felicity’s thought process and how she achieved it, has certainly motivated me to continue projects and experiment. I have been a photographer for 10 years but I don’t really feel I have developed my practice for me, as an artist. Before the MA I just shot imagery in the style that I thought the customer would want and guilty as charged maybe the easiest/quickest way to get the job done. I really loved the project Remain (S)https://www.felicitymccabe.com/album/r-e-m-a-i-n-s.html?p=1 her organic still life is just beautiful and refreshing to hear it was all through experimenting and having a go at something different, very motivating and I can’t wait till I work on different project.

Project update

There is just over a week before assignments have to be handed in, there was a forum for students to give and receive feedback on canvas. However I don’t think I will have time to participate to give feedback to other students. I have a clear action plan to make sure I get everything done in time. It is largely my oral presentation that I need to complete and a couple of contextual readings that I need to get my notes together and put into my CRJ. I also have a reshoot that I need to fit in which will finish off the final 2 images for my WIP. I have allocated time to go through my website and ensure little things like my about page, contents page is up to date, relevant and running smoothly.
