WIP-Sustainable Prospects

For this WIP I continued to present my imagery in the form of an online gallery, featuring 12 images from the ground of 3 different stations. They featured RAF Sandy Bay, RAF Maghaberry, RAF Mullaghmore and RAF Limavady. I also included 4 aerial images of RAF Sandy Bay, RAF Limavady, RAF Mullaghmore and RAF Omagh totalling my WIP to 16 images. I continued with labelling these images with the Station that features but also this time with the County, in the hope this could add some geographical connection with the viewer.

For my ground imagery I wanted to start considering the edit. For my final project realistically, I will only be able to show 2/3 images for each site being that there is 28 altogether. If I can only show a few images, I need to decide the best way to represent my intent and document these sites. I had a strategy that I wanted to stick to this module which included a wider frame.

With these images I wanted to try and move my focal point further away, in order to capture the landscape as it intertwines with the buildings that remain. Through the modules and right up to now, I think I have now captured most viewpoints. This will help me understand the best way to produce this body of work and the possible exhibition/publication.

To remain consistent, I continued with the soft grey lighting. Imagery was captured normally around a cloudy sunset which seemed to deliver the best sort of light, RAF Sandy Bay being the best example of that. RAF Limavady was a little later into the evening and was very overcast, which emphasised the large dormant grey hangars. Limavady is quite far away so I could only afford the one trip (time constraints). The grey lighting certainly helps to portray the area as a sad, sorry looking kind of place. Which relates I guess to the local communities, that come into contact daily with these places and think of them as an eyesore, ugly. For my FMP that won’t be my intent, I wish to give these places a voice something to visualise for possible regeneration project. It will be fine balance between aesthetics and objective representation of the buildings as they stand in their current form.

For the aerial images I wasn’t sure if to include them or not, I realise they are objective and will only suite for a publication, but I was curious to see if this would work with my project. This view point gives the viewer a greater perspective on the airfield’s presence, even to this day. Or even if the airfield has no visual remnants, a bird’s eye view helps to view the lay of the land. I shot these images in a helicopter through a small window which I didn’t mind. I didn’t want imagery that was vertical, you can get that on google earth. With these obliques you can make out the form of the landscape and the position of the actual airfields.
