FMP – Week Twenty

This week I had portfolio reviews at Belfast Photo Festival, which you can find a post on the outcome of that here. I also attended another event, the Unseen Dummy Award Presentation at Framewerk, Belfast. The promo says “The Unseen Dummy Award is a collaboration between Unseen Amsterdam and Lecturis. The dummies are prototypes of perspective photo books.” The presentation was opened by Daria Tuminas, Head of Book Market Unseen, which she explained the whole process of entering dummy books, criteria and who was on the board.

The talks then went into 4 of the artists that had been selected for the shortlist and the winner. These were great to hear about their individual body of works and how they fitted within a publication. How they worked with designers and some of the problems that they occurred when editing the final book. Not sure how many books were there but I flicked through a number of them, all shapes and sizes but very high quality. All had a real substantive feel about them and I could of spent ages looking through the pages. Some had more creative binding and some had folds within the paper (wonder how that would work for an actual publication). I was hoping there would be some more zines and smaller publications but couldn’t see any.

This week I also emailed Ernie Cromie (historian) to arrange a meet to help me with captions, I have arranged to meet him 25thJune to go through images but in the mean time I will send him a contact sheet so he can take a look. I also emailed PhD student Rebecca to see if she had any written pieces that could accompany my work but unfortunately at this time she doesn’t.

I had 1-2-1 with my tutor which went well and I just clarified a couple of things on gathering evidence and feedback for my FMP pdf so that was good to go over. I think I’m on the right track and just need to take a look at the edit and get rid of any weak imagery.
