FMP – Week Twenty-one

Quick post this week as I was on holiday but I managed to watch the guest lecture by Victoria Forrest. I have watched a couple from Victoria and she is certainly very knowledgeable around the subject of publishing and gives great insight on different ways to achieve this.

A few points from the lecture:

How to create a 32 page booklet or BLAD what to think about: what is it for? Is it a stand-alone piece in its own right or accompany an exhibition/takeaway from the event or is it a promotional piece- consider page size for postage etc.

BLAD- is an introduction to your work, make sure it is the same size as the book as so people will know how the end article will look. Know your message, how you will portray this in a 32 page booklet, be concise, one message, edit it and make simple, don’t confuse audience. Make every page works hard, don’t repeat concepts, edit similar images. Editing the photographs down to create a narrative, print them out and lay them out on the floor so you can see how work with each other so you discover the flow of your publication.

Will you use archive images to support your narrative, any objects associated with it. Titles, captions, sections and the text think about how this will work in your BLAD.

The ways in which books are bound- loose leaf, folded, Singer sewn- soft cover, nicer looking bind, Saddle stitching-bound by metal staples, Coptic, perfect binding – expensive.

Paper sizes- constraints from the photography, financial, sending out your booklet, really large pages cant be bound by machine.  3mm Bleed

Paper stocks- needs to be considered what will suit your imagery, uncoated paper not good for photography-ink sinks into page, won’t be bright or sharp. Highly coated gloss so ink sits on top of the page. Matt coated paper is more elegant.

Make sure files are CMYK and 300 dpi. Create match prints and ask for a proof before printing.
